Jobkorea's data, which compiled recruitment forecasts of 85 out of the top 100 listed companies, found 57.6 percent of the companies surveyed will hire a total of 9,766 new employees this year.

Demand for new employees was found to be the highest in the manufacturing sector, with the electric and electronics industry topping the list, with expected recruitments to reach 2,586.

It was followed by 1,128 IT and telecommunication hires, 1,076 finance and insurance hires, 1,070 machineries and steel industry hires, and 990 automobiles and airlines hires.

The Petrochemical industry, which is to hire 423 new employees, showed the highest percentage increase, up 7.4 percent from last year, followed by 6.5 percent in the automobile and airlines sectors and 5.7 percent in the construction industry.

The Power generation industry, however, is forecasting a reduction in the number of recruits, down 12.3 percent from last year. The Shipping and heavy industry sector is also expecting to decrease the number of new hires, down 3.8 percent from last year.

When it comes to the recruiting period, the majority of companies were found to hire new employees either in September or October - 28.6 percent of the companies surveyed said that they will accept applications in September, followed by 22.4 percent in October and 12.2 percent either in September and October.

Doosan Group is expecting to hire 600 to 700 new employees, increased from last year's 550, and Hyosung Group is expecting to recruit about 300 college graduates around September.

Korean Air is expecting to hire 100-150 new employees in October and other major firms such as Hanhwa Engineering & Construction Corp. and Kumho Tire Co. are is expecting to hire about 50 college graduates.

Out of the companies surveyed, 42.4 percent were found not to have decided on recruitment plans for 2007.
